Still at the Heart of Europe - 4th January 2003, 12.57

A dated article from the Glasgow Herald on the 1st January 2003 demonstrates that the British government was aware of the implications of an invigorated Franco-German relationship. Peter Hain still insisted that Britain was at the 'heart of Europe' and wanted to forge closer ties with France on decision making and with Germany on economic policy.

As the Herald concluded, this diplomatic policy seems destined for failure since it does not address the fundamental drive towards integration that has overtaken the Convention and is drawing the Labour Government along in its wake.
